My Bad Habit

Admit it: You have a bad habit. We all do. In fact, some of us probably have more than one. And that is fine. It is human nature to have a bad habit or two. Some people crack their knuckles, some chew on ice, some play with or chew their hair, and some bite their nails, like me. Granted, that list is not all-inclusive, but I think you get the idea. We all have bad habits.

As I just mentioned above, I bite my nails, and pick at my toenails at times (it is actually called onychophagia). I have ever since I can remember. There is even a picture of me when I was about nine months old lying on the changing table, with my foot in my mouth, attempting to chew on one of my toenails. Needless to say, I started early. Now, twenty-fours years later, I am still doing it, though sometimes I do not even realize I am doing it. I am no longer lying on a changing table, nor do I stick my feet in my mouth, but I still bite and pick my nails. It drives me absolutely bananas. And it really pisses me off.

I hate looking at my nails, seeing the little nubs of my fingers, with the even smaller nubs of my finger nails. (OK, that is not true. My nails are not that short, but they are not long and beautiful either.) Over the past ten years I have tried everything, really, everything, to stop biting my nails. You name it, I have (in all probability) tried it. Nothing has worked. Or maybe it worked temporarily, but in the end, I always go back to the tried and true--biting my nails.

I have read quite a bit on this over the years, and everything I have read so far says that nail biting is a reaction to stress, anxiety, excitement, boredom, inactivity, even hunger, and can be a learned behavior from family members. It is also very common (which really does not make me feel any better about it). Over the years, I have also discovered why I bite my nails. I bite due to all the reasons I just mentioned (except for hungry and learned behavior). If I am stressed or anxious, I bite. If I am sitting idly, doing nothing, I bite. If I am watching TV or relaxing, I bite. I bite. Apparently, I do not need a reason. What I have realized though, is that the reason I bite when I am not stressed or anxious, just bored, watching TV, or relaxing, is that I need something to do with my hands. They have to be kept busy. For me, that is the hardest part of not biting my nails. I can resist the urge to bite, I can stop myself if I realize I am doing it, but if I am sitting doing nothing, and my hands are free, I find it very hard to give my hands something to do to keep them occupied.

The last five to six months have been my best, though. I really stuck to it. Granted, I spent quite a bit of money on manicures, but they really helped. I did not bite my nails. Ok, maybe I picked at them, but it was much easier to stop when I saw a manicure on them (or to begin picking at the manicure instead--whatever works, right?). It was also much easier to stop once I actually saw that I had nails. Seeing the actual, real nails on my hands and fingers went a long way for me. Why? Simple really: Because I saw that I had nails, that I could, in fact, grow and have (semi) beautiful nails. I saw the results of not biting them, and I loved it. Not only that, but I was able to use my nails. I absolutely loved it.

I worked very hard at maintaining those nails. I got manicures, gave myself manicures, I made myself stop biting them, resisted the urges I had to do so, and continued to grow nails. And I did it. No, it was not perfect, and yes, I will admit that I did bite some off at times (especially the weaker ones which are so much easier to pick off and therefore so much harder to resist), but I did it. I had nails.

Then, there was a stressor. And off they came. That was about three weeks ago now. You would think that since then I have started to grow my nails again, right? Wrong. Now that they are gone, it is much easier to just continue picking and biting them off. I have nothing to look at, to see what it would look like if I let them grow. All I have are stubs, and the memory of what they used to look like. But I cannot go on a memory. It is very difficult to do this based only on a memory. I need to see it in front of me. I need proof. I need a nail, preferably three or four, to see that I can do it. But I know I can do this. I know. I have done it before, I can do it again. But I just need that one nail, that one starting point, yet I know I will never get it if I keep on picking and biting at what I have left.

One Of Those Days

Do you ever have one of those days where you are exhausted, can't seem to keep your eyes open, yet, somehow the day passes by very quickly, but you have no idea how that happened? Today was that day for me. Not a bad day, but definitely not a good day. I slept horribly last night, got up at an ungodly hour in the morning, yet, somehow, managed to make it to 6PM without a nap. To top it all off, I actually got a few hours of studying done!

But here I sit. It is almost 6PM, I am watching my cousin, playing endless games of Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook, and listening to music to drown out my little cousins' music. And now the time is dragging. It is too late for a nap and I cannot study because I am too exhausted, yet I have nothing to do. What does that leave me? Time to think. I hate that. I do not want to think, about anything, especially today when I am going on about three hours of sleep. But especially about the one thing I cannot seem to keep my thoughts away from the past few days. I do not want to think about that. I refuse to think about that. I want to avoid it, and everything about it.

Yet, here I am, sitting, blogging, and thinking about it somewhat. I would work on other blog posts if I thought they would come out even the least bit coherent, just to get my mind on something else, but I do not think I would even understand what I would try to write. I guess I will go back to playing endless games Bejeweled Blitz.

What To Do When You Are Bored

Yes, I'm bored. So what did I do? I did what I do best--I googled. And here is what I came up with.

From
Urban75:
(Click on the link to read all of their ideas; they are way too many to post.)

Some excerpts (and they even tell you how long it will amuse you!):

Have a water gargling contest
(Amusement Potential: 5-10 minutes)
Put a glassful of water in your mouth and see how long you can keep gargling for. Award yourself extra points for loud and amusing gargling noises, and minus points if you laugh.

Stare at the back of someone's head until they turn around
(Amusement Potential: 2-5 minutes)
This works on the "I have the feeling I'm being watched" principle. Conduct an experiment-does this really work?

Watch TV, repeat everything said in Italian accent
(Amusement Potential: 5-10 minutes)
Sort of entertaining. Include flamboyant shoulder shrugs for added impact, or go for a Marlon Brando set of grunts.

Their funniest thing though has to be their disclaimer:

DISCLAIMER: Obviously, a lot of these suggestions are really dumb things to do, so don't take them seriously.

And whatever you do, don't be as stupid as this halfwit from New Jersey who mailed us this: "we attempted your 'water drinking contest' we drank 48oz of water each in about 7 min, and 3 seconds later we were puking uncontrollably all over the kitchen. how dare you put this on your web site its very dangerous and health dangering. legal action may take place since you have no warnings on your site explaining you are not responsible for out comes of ''useless games' or the possible risks. please contact me back so we can settle this matter with out involving the law. "

I also found The Red Button. Whatever you do, do not push it.

My favorite find though, has to be Zutroy. But there's also Things To Do When You're Incredibly Bored and if you're ever bored in Walmart, you can always do these things.

I think now I will go back to being bored. Enjoy!

I was tagged about a month ago to do this fact-posting thing. No, it's not a meme. You just list eight interesting facts about yourself and then tag others.

The rules:
1) Each player lists 8 facts/habits about themselves.
2) The rules of the game are posted at the beginning before those facts/habits are listed.
3) At the end of the post, the player then tags 8 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know that they have been tagged and asking them to read your blog.

Eight facts/habits:
1) I have to smell anything and everything new before I eat it.
2) My parents divorced when I was 5 years old and I haven't seen my father since I was 13 years old.
3) At work/school I'm extremely organized, on top of everything. At home, my room is a mess.
4) I bite my nails, so to keep from biting them, I wear fake ones (and NO, they don't look tacky or completely fake!!).
5) My closet is organized by color, then length. I used to have it just by length, but didn't like it, so I changed it.
6) I read 2-4 books at once, and don't get confused or forget where I am in each book.
7) It's summer outside and I have 5 blankets on my bed. I like the weight on my feet. (One came off after winter was over.)
8) My favorite poem, "Footprints," is hanging on my wall on a huge poster.

Now I have to tag people, except since most of the blogs I read have been tagged, I can only tag three people. Abby, Ilana, and Carli, you're up!

My Survey! (Ok, really, it's Ilana's, but I stole it)

1. What is your name? Kahbbeberlitz & McLockerritz
2. If you could have a different name, what would it be? Jill
3. If you gave your kids English names, what would they be? Ummmm...I always liked the name Shane for a boy. Dylan too, but we all know how that turned out, so Dylan is off the list. For a girl, I like Chris, Jamie, and Emma.
4. What is your favorite flavor Snapple? Peach, Mango Madness, and Kiwi Strawberry.
5. What is your favorite color? Purrrrrrrple
6. What is your least favorite color? Anything brown or brownish, and sometimes black depending on my mood. Other colors I may not like also depend on my mood, but in general, I like the bright colors, but not too bright.
7. One thing you want to try but are too scared to actually do: Skydiving is the one that comes to mind the quickliest, so I'm going to assume that.
8. One scary thing you tried and are glad you did: Skycoasting! Omg, I want to go do that again! Who's with me?
9. Fear: Spiders, centipedes (EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW to both), and some people on the bus and/or train.
10. Sunrise or sunset? Ohhhhhh...good one. I'm gonna have to go with....I can't choose! I'm going with both.
11. Early bird or night owl? Night owl baby. Definitely a night owl. I am SOOOOOO *not* a morning person.
12. Favorite item of clothing: My favorite pair of jeans. :D
13. Least favorite: I have many, do have to choose? Gotta go with Ilana on this one-pantyhose. But I also greatly dislike knee-highs and some skirts.
14. Secret ambition: None really. I'm pretty vocal about what I want to do, so most people know. If not, well, too bad for those who don't. :P JK. Actually, I'd really like to someday be top ADA, but not DA. That seems like too much work, plus, I wouldn't get to go into court and fight that often.
15. Best soundtrack to work out to: Work out? What's that? Whatever is on my iPod that I feel like listening to at the time.
16. Best thing to eat at a movie: Chocolate, buttered popcorn, and a Coke (though that always makes me have to pee in the middle or best part of the movie, but i don't because I don't want to miss anything, so I wait until the movie's over and then make a beeline to the bathroom only to have to wait because EVERYONE else is in there too!).

17. Would you rather shop alone or with a friend? Alone. I like being by myself sometimes and that would give me time to have some "me" time.
18. Eat a dead bug or kiss a live snake? Thanks for making me puke Ilana. Very gross, but you get points for creativeness (but not many because you made me puke). I'd have to go with the snake too. No way am I putting a bug in my mouth, let alone a dead one.
19. If you were stranded on a deserted island, and you could only have one thing, what would you bring with you? My cell phone 'cause them I could call for help. I'm surprised no one thought of that before. If i couldn't bring my cell, I'd have to bring...a sweater or sweatshirt. I hear nights are cold on deserted islands, especially when there's no one to help you keep warm.

20. Best book ever? Oh, so many! I love Janet Evanovich and her Stephanie Plum series, but I also like anything by Nora Roberts. There are others, but I'm drawing a blank.
21. Best movie ever? Pirates of the Caribbean! Woohoo! Ilana and Abby, remember we have date to see it in theaters next year? Yay! I also like Beauty & the Beast, and The Little Mermaid (mainly for the songs though).
22. Are you a messy person or a neat person?
Well, at home I tend to be messy, but at work/school I'm so neat, I guess because I have to be, especially at work.
23. Do you sleep on your back, side, or stomach?
I'm a side sleeper. I used to be a back sleeper, and before that I was a side sleeper, and now I'm back to being a side sleeper.
24. Purse or bag/tote?
Hmmmm...I like purses because they're cute and they limit the amount of things you can carry with you. But totes allow you to put more in, espcially when you don't feel like carrying a million bags with your things in them because you have an actual purse.

And I'm going to end on 24 because it's an even number and I like even numbers better than odd numbers (and I'm in a superstitious mood right now-don't ask). Anyone is welcome to steal this survey (btw, the last three questions I added, so I want credit for them if you credit the survey). Nighty night peeps!
