JLo and the Grain

Today my mom, brother, and I went up to Burlington Coat Factory, since both my brother and I needed new winter coats. So I went off on my own to look for a coat while my mom went with my brother. I ended up getting a JLo coat, which actually surprised me, mainly because I tend to go against the grain, and there I was, going with the grain. So I started thinking about that, about why I go against the grain and why others go with it. I realized that it's not so much that I go against it, it's that I buy what I like and if it happens that it's not "in" or "popular" well, so be it. Too bad for everyone else.

But why do people feel the need to go with the grain, be in the "in" crowd? Now, I'm not talking teenagers, I'm talking about pwoplw in their 20s and up. I'd think that by the time they reach their 20s they'd be secure enough in themselves to be themselves and buy what they like. But not everyone is. I don't pretend to know why they still feel the need to buy what is in style or what everyone else has, because I don't. I can speculate, but I really don't know. It's just that my whole JLo coat thing made me wonder. In the meantime though, I am still going to buy what I like, even if no one else is buying it.

That's how I shop, too! Hehe. My style (if you can call it that) tends to be rather eclectic for that reason. If it's in style and I happen to like it, great; but if I think it's ugly, nothing doing.

The truth is, designer clothes are a status symbol for adults at least as much as (if not more than) they are for children. I think that's the main reason why people "go with the grain", as you put it.

I'm also eclectic Enigma. I have clothes that I wore from when I was a freshman in high school, none of which are in style now. But I don't care. I still like them, they fit, and I'm comfortable in them. If no one likes that, well, too bad for them.

I was thinking that designer clothing is a status symbol. But what I don't get is, no one can see the tag, so why do these people care who they wear? (It's rhetorical, so don't feel that you need to answer.)

i'm the queen of eclectic. not that i never wear anything in style, but i dont buy a particular label unless i personally care about it. a lot of times i steer away from something that EVERYBODY likes (supposedly), just because i'd rather be different. and i have a lot of things that others would probably consider just plain odd, but they work for me.

i was going to say what enigma said about status symbols. i cant really do better than that. too many people have too strong of a herd mentality.

Lol, Beans. I can totally see you being eclectic. Sometimes I purposely don't buy things because it's what everyone has, but it's usually something I can live without or something I don't love/want too badly. I guess everybody has their 'thing.'

Everyone trys so hard to be different, they end up being more mainstream then us regular folks.

Too true CD, too true. But sometimes people don't even try, they just are different. They dare to be themselves.

It's great that you buy what you want despite the latest styles. Enjoy your new coat.

i think that the reason we have trends is b/c there are a lot of shallow insecure people out there that need to feel like there "IN" so ya im the same way although i really want to buy a pair of crocks there these really lite weight sandels that are super comfortable but every other person down here wears them so im in a lot of turmoil over weather i should buy them or not i really hate being just like everybody else

Pesach-If you want the crocs, buy 'em. My point is not to be different for the sake of being different. My point is buying/wearing what you like because you LIKE them, not because everyone else likes them. (Btw, crocs have got to be some of the ugliest shoes ever.)

If you really think about it all the Anti-conformists are conforming to something. I always say I am an anti-conformist, but take me out of the Jewish crowd and put me at a punk show or something and I look and talk like everyone else.

The bumper sticker "all you anti-conformists are the same" pretty much somes it up.
